Abby Sunderland was found safe today by a passing plane. Her boat was completely adrift. Because she was so far from land, the rescue ship will still take about 2 days to reach her, but she has plenty of food and water to remain healthy during that time.
What an exciting adventure. I, personally, applaud her parents for allowing their young child to pursue her adventurous dreams. I hope they were not doing it for fame...thats for only them to know in their hearts.
What a relief to find out Abby is okay! I was just reading about her today in the paper, and was worried. I knew a young woman who, just a few years older than Abby, sailed around the world on her own in a small boat, using only a nautical almanac, chronometer, and sextant for navigation. I read a terrific book years ago called, "Around the World Single-Handed." I think you would like it. It is about an Indiana farm boy who, around 191 or so, decided that it was the sea life for him, so he hitchhiked to California, camped on the beach, built a boat without any previous experience, and sailed it around the world. The stories in the book are just amazing! Lashing himself to the wheel for three days at a time during big blows...meeting amazing natives in Polynesia...quite a story.
ReplyDeleteWow that really sounds like a fantastic book! I will try and get ahold of it and maybe review it in my blog.
ReplyDeleteIf you havent read "dove" yet, I also would highly recommend it. A fantastic book!
